British Columbia has a diverse seafood industry with marine commercial fisheries providing enhanced social and economic benefits through responsible management practices that protect the environment and maintain viable healthy fish stocks.
This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. Close to 2,400 vessels harvested 22.2 per cent more wild
fish, shellfish and marine plants in 2016 than in 2015. The 188,000-tonne commercial fishery harvest generated a total landed value of $392.8 million – up 2.3 per cent over 2015.
