Farm-raised Atlantic salmon at Whole Foods Market
It was a pleasure to see farm-raised Atlantic salmon as one of the sustainable and ethical choices at Whole Foods Market. Farm-raised salmon, raised right, is good for our health and the environment. Think about it, the heavier the protein, the harder it is on the environment. Salmon is light and healthy.
The original Whole Foods Market opened in 1980 with a staff of only 19 people, today they are the world’s leader in natural and organic foods, with 481 stores in North America and the United Kingdom.
The world finally caught up with the Whole foods philosophy.
Consumers were starting to demand transparency about the food they eat and Whole foods stepped in to do the work for them. As the global demand escalated for sustainable food and natural food products, the company created a set of standards that include the following:
- They carefully evaluate each and every product they sell.
- They feature foods that are free of artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners, and hydrogenated fats.
- They are committed to foods that are fresh, wholesome and safe to eat.
- They provide food and nutritional products that support health and well-being.
- They research everything from food additives to antibiotics
“If you want to know what goes into the products you buy, our standards make it easy, because if it doesn’t meet the standards, we don’t sell it.” Whole Foods.
This company has never shied away from their belief system, they will not make apologies for purveying sustainable food sourced from reputable companies that are meeting their incredibly high standards.
Farm-Raised Salmon
Whole Foods sell salmon that are raised in low-density pens and tanks and are fed a diet without antibiotics, pesticides or added growth hormones. There must be detailed protocols in place to prevent escape of the salmon into the wild. Harmful and lethal methods are never used on predator birds and marine mammals. Pigments used for colorant are from non-synthetic sources. A resounding NO to genetically modified (GMO) or cloned seafood. There must be traceability from farm to store. And it goes without saying, there must be multiple Third-party audits.
Most people love the flavour, texture and freshness of farm-raised salmon. Farmed salmon is full to the gills with essential nutrients. Salmon is gentle on the digestive system.
