Salmon Farming: Innovation and Connection on British Columbia’s Coast

Salmon farming is a key industry in British Columbia, blending modern technology with traditional stewardship to ensure a sustainable seafood supply. By creating jobs and fostering innovation, the sector supports both local communities and the environment.

Cermaq Canada is a leader in this space, leveraging advanced tools and data to maintain high-quality standards and minimise environmental impact.

Meet Deja Coupe, salmon farming on Vancouver Island

“My name is Deja Coupe, and I’m an Assistant Production Data Analyst at Cermaq Canada. I start my day with a coffee and head to my desk,” says Deja.

Using the company’s FishTalk database, Deja analyses data collected daily from farms, including oxygen levels, seasonal plankton blooms, and other environmental factors. This information allows her team to prepare better, optimise equipment, and maintain high standards for sustainability and quality.

“Standardisation within the company and industry is important to keep the quality up for the customer, minimise environmental impact, and drive progress,” Deja explains.

While Deja never expected to enjoy time on the water, her hands-on experiences, like sampling fish, have deepened her connection to her work. “It’s a very magical experience,” she shares.

The Future of Salmon Farming

The dedication of people like Deja Coupe showcases how data, technology, and passion come together to drive the success of British Columbia’s salmon farming industry.

By integrating environmental responsibility with innovation, Cermaq Canada and its team are setting the standard for sustainable aquaculture. Their efforts ensure that salmon farming remains a vital, forward-thinking industry for generations to come.
